Southview Park

Atwood Ave
Sausalito, CA 94965
1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars

Situated on a steep hill, this park has a breath-taking view of the Bay. True to Sausalito style, it is made up of several terraces. On the upper most one is a small green lawn area, just below is the fully fenced-in playground. It lies exposed to full sun with no shade available. But before you lather on the sun block, check it out since fog tends to be more of what you will be exposed to here. One swing for a toddler another for an older child hang side by side. There is one a metal and plastic climbing gym with corkscrew slide built over sand. Below the playground is a basketball court surrounded by inspiring flowerbeds where once there were bleachers. Beyond this lies a tennis court.

As found with many structures in Sausalito, this playground is built into a hill by means of terraces. Strollers may approach it from below, stairs must be negotiated from above. The play equipment is on a bed of soft sand and is fully fenced. The top terrace is for toddlers with two toddler full-bucket swings, a wooden climbing structure, two slides, one a tunnel, the other a broad metal slide that warrants supervision. The lower terrace for older kids houses a tire swing, two big kid swings and a great long slide all of which are mounted on a wooden play structure. There is a metal climbing gym set apart from the rest. The area is surrounded by a large lawn, a lighted basketball court, and a small picnic area.

Bonus

The Parks and Recreation Department houses activities for young children such as music and playtime in the basement of the building.

If you can find this park, it wins the award for the best view of Belvedere and Ring Mountain. Set high up in the hills of Sausalito, this playground has the feeling of an old garden estate complete with meeting house, non-public bathrooms and a brick patio which can all be rented out. The play ground has two sets of swings for toddler and older kids, a big metal slide that is meant for older children and horizontal bars built over sand. If your little one is not too thrilled with the equipment, don’t pack it in just yet. Pull out a blanket and have a picnic. It’s too beautiful a spectacle to miss.

Castro Field

Vendola Dr
Santa Venetia, CA 94903

This is a new playground which replaced the run-down ball park known as Castro Field. It is not visible from the road and is entered through one of three alley-ways between the surrounding homes. There is a large grassy area with groomed dirt paths. At one end is a small metal and plastic play structure on wood chips with side-by-side slide, tunnel, square ladder, and a short curved climbing wall. For the time being there are no swings or sandbox. But considering that this was created by the Santa Venetia Neighborhood Association, there is a good chance that those might show up one day. In any case, playground goers should be grateful for the new park complete with a volleyball net, picnic tables, benches and new trees which will grow up to provide shade.

Victor Jones Park

San Rafael, CA 94901

Most folks go to Peacock Gap when they are in this vicinity, but if you are looking for a change, try this neighborhood playground. The park is stretched out over a long narrow hillside. On the upper end near Robinhood Dr. is the playground. The toddler side is fully fenced in and has a small plastic and metal structure over sand. The older kids have a larger climbing structure with a big arch of swings. To date there are six swings, but the spacing police may cut these back to three as has been the pattern. Plenty of shade covered picnic tables and barbeque facilities reside on the lower level area.

Bonus

There is a lot for older kids and for the big kid in all of us. Check out the baseball diamond, volleyball court, shuffleboard, and two basketball courts.
